Curriculum

Riverbank Charter School of Excellence is organized around a constructivist philosophy that recognizes that students learn primarily by direct involvement with ideas and materials rather than through passive transfer of information from books or teachers. This is a philosophy that promotes a learning community in which students assume an active role in their own learning. The educational staff are skilled professionals whose role it is to assist and guide students in developing higher-order thinking and problem-solving skills along with a deeper understanding of important facts and concepts.

Riverbank Charter School of Excellence has adopted the New Jersey State Learning Standards (Website).  The basis behind these standards is to prepare students, even at the earliest age, for college as well as their extended futures. The purpose of these standards is to span across the nation to provide a cohesive education at all state levels. It is our goal at Riverbank Charter School of Excellence to introduce these central ideas into the students so that they are life long learners well past their collegiate years.

The
New Jersey State Learning Standards drive our academic instruction on a daily basis at Riverbank Charter School of Excellence. Teachers are well versed in these standards and incorporate them across the curriculum. They are integrated into learning through many hands-on experiences both within and outside of the school walls. The standards and our curriculum help students to see what they are learning, why they are learning it, and be able to explain how they learned many crucial skills.

Instructional strategies includes lessons in the basic skills of reading, writing, grammar, phonics, spelling, and mathematics using research-based programs. Science, social studies, technology, health and the arts are taught through an integrated, thematic approach. In addition to subject area knowledge, critical skills, such as problem-solving, decision-making, communication and organization are taught by providing challenging, experiential curriculum with opportunities to practice and exhibit their knowledge and skills.

Our curriculum uses innovative, motivational practices for instructing children of varying ability levels. We strive to meet the needs of all students through diverse learning techniques that will challenge all learners. Effective instructional programs enhance our curriculum.
